Louis XIII, XIV, XV

It is not a surprise that Louis XIII frames show Italian influence, as his mother was Maria de Medici. Ornament was brought to the outer edges and corners of frames, yielding the LXIII “flower corner” frame. Overall floral carving becomes more elaborate and luxurious during the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King. The reign of Louis XV is also called the Rococo period, with reposes of unadorned, sweeping panels accenting the movement of the larger, but more delicately carved pieced corners.
