20th & 21st Century

In the early 20th century American Impressionist frames were influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, stressing a return to hand carving with a nod to a distinctly fresh American spontaneity. Cassetta profiles return but in a new way with wide flat panels. Modernism introduced the simplification of frame profiles to basic angled and stepped shapes, stripped of ornamentation. Minimalism leads to the creation of the float frame and increased use of the simple cap moulding.
